Number of Sessions to teach the topic 1-2 sessions (Additional session for presentation)
Educational standards to be addressed Common Core ELA/Writing/Math Standards
  • CCSS.Math.Content.6.SP.B.5
Summarize numerical data sets in relation to their context, such as by:
  • CCSS.Math.Content.6.SP.B.5.a
    Reporting the number of observations.
  • CCSS.Math.Content.6.SP.B.5.b
Describing the nature of the attribute under investigation, including how it was measured and its units of measurement.
Main Content Ideas
  • 5.1
Explain and predict different patterns of motion of objects (e.g., linear and uniform circular motion, velocity and acceleration, momentum and inertia). (i) construct and interpret graphs of position, velocity, or acceleration versus time; (ii) determine and interpret slopes and areas of motion graphs; (iii) determine the acceleration due to gravity near the surface of Earth.
COSMOS concepts to be used for the lab Real-time data, Chronograph formatting of results allow students to visualize the data.
K12 Educational Goals (How the educational goals are achieved through teaching using the experiment, how the topic is connected to the COSMOS concepts used) Projectile motion and freefall questions focus a lot on calculation at high school level. I hope students visualize how velocity change in vertical and horizontal components through the data collection by using COSMOS toolkit. I want them visualize how velocity change per second due to the effect of gravity.
Short Description and Walk-through of the experiment
In this experiment, students will the drop the IoT sphere, from the first and the second floor and oberve how velocity change per second due to the effect of gravity.
Testbed mapping of the experiment Testbed nodes-sensors can provide real-time sensor data.

Experiment Execution

To collect measurements from nearby Internet-of-Things (IoT) nodes press START. In order to terminate the experiment press STOP.
