COSMOS concepts to be used for the lab Transmission of electronic data can be blocked by different materials.
K12 Educational Goals (How the educational goals are achieved through teaching using the experiment, how the topic is connected to the COSMOS concepts used) Certain materials can block the transmission of radio waves. The COSMOS Technology Toolkit along with several different materials can be used to show students that some materials can block the transmission of radio waves.
Short Description and Walk-through of the experiment Students will work in groups to perform a series of experiments using 5 different materials with the COSMOS Technology Toolkit to see which one blocks the transmission of radio waves. There are 3 parts to the activity.
  1. Part 1: Uses the COSMOS Technology Toolkit to transmit a radio signal and alternately using each of the 5 materials to try to block the signal.
  2. Part 2: Uses walkie-talkies to transmit the radio signal and see which material will block the signal.
  3. Part 3: Uses copper fabric over a cardboard box to create a copper box and see if radio signals can be transmitted into and out of the box.
  4. Finally, students will answer questions on their handout relating to the activity they have just completed.
Testbed mapping of the experiment The experiment can be extended by executing it into a testbed (ORBIT/COSMOS) through the following steps:
This experiment can also be done on the WITEST, ORBIT, and COSMOS testbeds to give real time observations.

Experiment Execution

Select the appropriate function or the node (i.e., Transmitter or Receiver) and press START to begin the experiment. In order to terminate the experiment press STOP.
